MI Open Book

MI Open Book
Started in 2014 as part of the Technology Readiness Infrastructure Grant (TRIG) the MI Open Book project is designed to give kids a first exposure to the content that they will learn about in their social studies courses. Funded by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), the MI Open Book resources were created by teachers from around the state who have taught their content for many years. They are edited and maintained by professionals from the field of Social Studies which include ISD consultants, university faculty, and district curriculum leaders who all have extensive background knowledge in their content. It is a true collaboration of k-12 and higher education.
How is it open?

Mystery Science

Mystery Science features multimedia science units for K-5. Each lesson starts by posing a question commonly asked by kids, like "Do plants eat dirt?" or "Why are so many toys made out of plastic?" A series of short videos and prompts then guides a class discussion, followed by an experiment that can be done as a class. Lessons cover a wide range of topics, including light and sound, biodiversity, engineering, and the water cycle. Mystery Science encourages teacher collaboration with the capability to pin, tweet, or share units using various social media platforms.

Freckle

Freckle is a practice website (and app) for grades K–12 that addresses standards-based skills and concepts in core subject areas. From the dashboard, teachers can create rosters manually or import from Google Classroom. Teachers will find a plethora of ready-to-assign content in the form of pre-tests, 3-, 5-, or 10-question assessments, printable or digitally sharable worksheets, inquiry-based lessons, and benchmark assessments. In addition, they'll have access to video tutorials, student dashboards, student progress monitoring tools, and more. Teachers can find a set of sample student questions as well, allowing them to differentiate standards-based content for students from a comprehensive, ever-growing library of resources. Freckle is offered to teachers for free, but the School Edition upgrade offers unlimited access to assignments, lessons, reports, and targeted benchmark assessments.

When your child reads, he or she looks at the written words on a page and decides what spoken words the written words represent. But that doesn’t help him understand what he is reading unless he also knows the meanings of those spoken words.

The collection of spoken words that a child understands is usually called his or her oral vocabulary. The larger a child’s oral vocabulary, the more words he or she will be able to read and understand.

There are many ways to increase a child’s oral vocabulary, and different children learn in different ways. The best way is just to talk together about the people and things that are in your child’s world. You can also build oral vocabulary when you share books, stories, songs and rhymes, and talk about the meanings of words. Games and puzzles can help, too.
